5 Quick Things: January 2024

Welcome to 5 Quick Things that I saw since last month that I thought were interesting enough to share with you. None of them are particularly timely so feel free to just enjoy 🙂

>Number One<

Mystery Literature

I wasn’t a Nancy Drew girl, but I did read a few of them growing up (and about one and half Hardy Boys adventures which I found about 50% as interesting.) It’s great to me to see that people are still loving these books and coming together to celebrate them.

Same as it Ever Was

It’s wild that these off-color coloring book from the 60s is both hyper relevant and irrelevant to the modern day. For some reason it reminds me of Mad Men by the way of Mad comics. I think the world is actually just as rigid but in different ways. Maybe you can sit around without pants on if you’re tele-working but you’re still going to have to be colored all grey inside.

>Number Three<

Colonialism is Environmentalism

I’m a big fan of Gittemary Johansen, who is an interesting Youtuber that talks about sustainability and the environment. She also happens to be Danish which means that when all this talk about Trump wanting to take over Greenland started I actually thought about her and thankfully she released a video where she talks about what is means to her, as a Danish native, and what it might mean for the environment if the colonialism project of America is started up again.

We’ll Do Our Best

This article came out a few months ago but has been sitting in the back of my brain. One of the things that is happening, and at a rate that we almost cannot comprehend, are things that will hurt the ones we love and change the world as we know it. You can’t fight against absolutely everything all at once but it is hard to know where to start (especially if you haven’t started before, no shade, it’s just true).

>Number Five<

Growing Old in Society is a Nightmare

Personally I found the body horror in The Substance to be more like gawking. Many people reported that the biggest laughs and shocks simply came from experiencing Moore’s old body. However I found this review/overview of The Substance from an over 50 women to be more interesting than almost every review from a mid-20s woman or a man. I still think the film misses the mark for me but I am more open to the concept that I might change my opinion in 15 years.

That’s all for this month and hopefully I’ll see you back again next month with some more exciting and cool things!
