Welcome to 5 Quick Things that I saw since last month that I thought were interesting enough to share with you. None of them are particularly timely so feel free to just enjoy 🙂

That’s Not A Club

I know that a lot of people have moved on from the concept of emerging cults because there’s a lot of more pressing issues happening but I actually do think it might be extremely important to slow down and examine why there are so many cults right now and especially why there are so many rationalist cults since they’re driving a lot of tech movement these days. I think that talking about AI in almost any capacity means that we need to bring up why these technologies are being pushed so hard. While there are plenty of financial reasons I think we’d really be amiss to skip the social ones like the rationalist cult who worship AI.

They’re Haunted by Us Too

Stories about houses are probably inherently a little interesting because all humans need shelter and when you need something you pretty much constantly develop a complex relationship with it: your parents, food, the sea, and so on. This article explores the house through a series of (mostly) horror books suggestions which is great for both exploring houses but also getting cozy during this spooky season.

Digital Double Vision
What’s So Great About That? has done so many fantastic videos about scary themes and since it’s spooky season and I’ve been thinking about AI and it’s attempts to replace us on the internet I went back and watched her video about Digital Doubles again only to find that it is still absolutely fantastic. If you’re looking for even more spooky themed things I’d also suggest her video about David Lynch’s careful use of language.

Give It a Try

I saw this cheeky little zine and while I have a background in languages that have no connection to English it is probably fun for people who haven’t learned anything beyond some basics in a romance language to check out. I’m in a “too many languages, not enough time” paradigm but it was fun it look at the structure of Persian for a few minutes and think about it.
>Number Five<
Solar Power Ready to Go At Any Moment

You’re probably familiar with Cory Doctorow for his wonderful work on the internet and from coining the term enshitification but he also writes a lot of really in-depth and interesting blog posts. This one is a fantastic breakdown of solar energy which is a topic I think I want to explore more in the future. Plus this piece is a little optimistic which I think we could all use right now.
That’s all for this month and hopefully I’ll see you back again next month with some more exciting and cool things!
