Welcome to 5 Quick Things that I saw since last month that I thought were interesting enough to share with you. None of them are particularly timely so feel free to just enjoy 🙂
>Number One<
To Be Seen Is To Be Judged
While I usually see Olurinatti doing media breakdowns which I’m not usually very interested in, someone had linked me this video a little while ago and I finally decided to check out this Youtube and I cannot have enough praise for it. I’m sure we all abstractly know that being pretty comes with benefits in society but this video digs down into what happens when you can’t even access those benefits on any level.
>Number Two<
Girlboss Too Close to the Sun
I always enjoy Ro Mooknee‘s video where she breaks down feminist topics with a dry wit and a little bit of scampy attitude but I also really appreciated this video because I remember the girl boss era so clearly. The first time I ever heard about girl boss/lean in behavior I was struggling to get up the cooperate ladder myself and immediately recognized a bunch of red flags and this video pulls apart those red flags to how we got here to “baby girl”, the polar opposite (or real just the same thing in a different branding).
>Number Three<
Mahjong is The Devil
I grew up playing mahjong with my grandmother and her friends and all the little old Chinese ladies at the swimming poll so I had absolutely no idea that mahjong might be something else in China, its place of origin other than a fun activity I mostly associate with little old Jewish ladies (including my mom now!) and Chinese old ladies. I really love this piece by Robert Cheng even though a couple times in it I cringed because he does a lot of socially awkward things (just a heads up there for all your people who can’t handle a little second hand embarrassment).
>Number Four<
Yoruba Tellings
When I was a very young child I was extremely interested in epic poetry which led me to read philosophy from a lot of different regions of the world since those epic poems are often deeply connected to religious text and philosophical thinking. Unfortunately when I grew up I became deep disinterested in the formal application of philosophy because it seemingly ignores all traditions outside of Europe/US and “the west” and those are generally highly inaccessible to people not willing to read a 600 page epic poem/history. I appreciate COLORMIND deep diving into Yoruba philosophy which I had to only cursory encountered and I think you’ll probably enjoy it too.
>Number Five<
I Know You’re Tired of Superhero Stuff but I Swear This is Really Good
I found this video while looking for a different one but I loved it because The Morbid Zoo breaks down the reason I don’t like a lot of the Marvel/superhero movies by zeroing in on the functions of the two main characters in Spider man Brand New Day (which I also didn’t like, sorry everyone). Kind of like explaining how a bad adaptation doesn’t adequately work this video explains how and why the characters are used in the comics and how they fail in that utility in the movies which is more forgivable for some characters than others.
That’s all for this month and hopefully I’ll see you back again next month with some more exciting and cool things!
