Not Like Other ‘That Girls’
I’m don’t use Tiktok for a number of reasons but I started to see the proliferation on a new-old concept of ‘that girl’ start to trickle down to the rest of the internet and this is great article that really sums up the what and why of the concept. You can see it as another arm of the girl boss culture but it also has to do with the hyper performative and exhausting capitalistic concepts like “I just woke up like this” “self care” “hustle culture” which are unquestioning in their desire to make actual choices and actions into aesthetics and signifiers. It’s frustrating.
*I’m not on TikTok because I downloaded it, played around for two days and found it to mostly be a useless void I would get sucked into for way longer than any other social media (which has a finite amount of “content” I will be served) and I can’t imagine myself ever making a video so I deleted it because I have enough time wasters in my life but if you love it and it works for you I’m happy. Just in case you were curious.

The Further Commodification of Self
You could actually say that this second article goes hand and hand with the one above because it has the saleability of the self from a different angle.
I wouldn’t say this article is 100% the be-all of articles about mental illness in our time but it is interesting to look at the memes and conversations on social media around ADHD specifically and read this article about how a lot of mental illness is basically come about through the systems where we receive trauma and don’t process it but those problems are now an identity making it difficult to see the systems and links around it but also to find ways through what might be temporary things or this which have advantages and reasonable managements.

A Queer Reading of 2 Fast 2 Furious
Ben from Canada is a Youtuber who only recently started making his own videos but has been doing editing work for a few other people on the internet. I’m not really on board with all of his videos but his editing work is topic notch and this particular video is an absolute banger. I always like when people take a comphet text and do a queer reading of it and since I saw 2 Fast 2 Furious when it came out and remembered nearly nothing about it this was a really fun way to get a refresher of where this franchise used to be but also its a plausible reading of the film. What a 2 Lovely 2 Smart discourse!

The Story of McDonald’s in Denmark
We’re right now deep in the trenches in America of arguing about minimum wage and how people “don’t want to work” and all of that nonsense that has come about with the reality that people realized that the government could just support them, their lives would be materially better with even just slightly more money, and that other countries have systems which entail much stronger and stricter safety nets (which is to say, at all). A poster child for this argument is that McDonald’s in Denmark pays $20/hr and their burgers only cost a few cents more and while that is, on its face, true, it would also help to have the whole story and why that doesn’t just magically happen because Denmark is just such a wonderful land of sunshine and roses. It could happen here too.

Pollution in a not a Closed System
On Twitter last week I saw the hashtag #TeamSeas pop up and I went through a lot of feelings reading about it. I’m going to ask that people read this article about how scooping plastic out of the ocean is not a solution, the same way that building cars that use less gas is not going to fix climate change.
No cleanup effort is cheaper and more effective than preventing plastic from entering the environment, the study found.
Alright folks, ended on a bit of a downer but that’s it for this month, see you next month!
Welcome to 5 Quick Things that I saw since last month that I thought were interesting enough to share with you. None of them are particularly timely so feel free to just enjoy 🙂
