Welcome to 5 Quick Things that I saw since last month that I thought were interesting enough to share with you. None of them are particularly timely so feel free to just enjoy 🙂
>Number One<
Open Market
I think accidentally I made the entry this month entirely about art. You can make an argument that everything is art but really I guess I was just thinking about art and its place in society, how we support it, and its dissemination because AI has really gone and steamrolled an already harsh industry. As this article notes even non-profits and schools at art expos end up in a pay to play model and it doesn’t actually encourage bold, interesting art or “mistakes.” I think you can argue it doesn’t make art at all sometimes.
>Number Two<
Launching New Dick Technology
The news cycle has bizarrely tried to move on from ICE or doesn’t highlight it as much so I do appreciate people coming out and doing intensely wild things to get the attention of the media and I saw a lot of pearl clutching specially around this action of dildo waving. America is such an interesting country where it both has extreme prudish tendencies but also a streak of people who want to defy any taboo immediately. At this time resulted in something positive and funny.
>Number Three<
Lost Ark of Drake
I think I found Mike from the Party on one of my weird days when I just wanted to learn more about strange theme parks but this video talks about something I had literally never heard of. While we’re all dunking on Drake for righteous reasons, did you know that he unearthed a theme park made by artists like Keith Haring, Salvidor Dali, and Jean-Michel Basquiat from storage and displayed them in LA? It’s genuinely an interesting story.
>Number Four<
Banal Comedy
I’ve never watched an episode of Jimmy Fallon but I’ve always found the clips that wind their way into different media off-putting and odd. More than even any of the other late night hosts who run the gambit from fine to John Oliver doing a pretty okay job of explaining how systems in the US work and need to be changed, Fallon seems like a man having no actual thoughts, simply there to do the facsimile of comedy. Turns out at least one other person agrees with me.
>Number Five<
Support Artists. That is All.
It’s unclear what is happening in your house but in my mine my husband has gone head first into loving Angine de Poitrine so when this article popped up I was pretty ecstatic. This thing is to make good art you actually have to make a lot of bad art first. This is pretty normal if you think about it. No one pops out and suddenly is fantastic at the violin or drawing, it takes years of practice to get to a point where you’re making palatable things let alone good ones but in a world where you starve if you’re not working…art is impossible. Or only possible for people who have the money to fail – a lot – for a long time! Anyway just paying people money and letting the people who want to try to make art actually have the space to do that is a huge net plus to society!
That’s all for this month and hopefully I’ll see you back again next month with some more exciting and cool things!
