Welcome to 5 Quick Things that I saw since last month that I thought were interesting enough to share with you. None of them are particularly timely so feel free to just enjoy 🙂
>Number One<
We Need To Learn Community

I’ve been thinking a lot of about the early internet since I have pretty much been here the whole time I’ve been alive. We got internet when I was 5 and at that time it was the tail end of usenet and the dawning of AOL chatrooms and I’ve been through many flavors of community and group building (and falling) that even though I was never a DeviantArt person this article still gives me a lot to chew on about where we are going.
>Number Two<
Meditations of Deafness

I wish there were more interaction between disability and non-disability spaces and this piece kind of gets to the heart of why that’s such a hard barrier to cross because the second a deaf person speaks, all conceptualization of them as a person who might have different needs goes out the window. How we need to learn to see things more fluid and how people who already live in those in-between areas can help us get there.

So, About Youtube Essays
I really enjoyed this short piece by Chris Waves about Youtube and essays on Youtube. I know that’s not new ground but honestly I am happy to be able to link a shorter than average video that tells people they need to be critically engaging with the things they watch and doing their own research as well. But also stop using the algorithm to serve you things and start getting more curious about the world!
>Number Four<
The World Turned

I think this piece about the indie web actually dovetails very nicely with the Deviant Art article above because if you want to create on the internet and you want to start a website, a conversation, a community it turns out that it’s really hard and it’s probably even harder for people who have never experienced those things in the first place.
>Number Five<
Food Woes

Probably I should try to end these on a happy note but there’s so many horrors that it’s actually very difficult to ignore them all and one of the things that’s been on my brain lately (after the radioactive shrimp kerfuffle) is food chains. Food chains broke and break far more in the US than here in Europe during COVID. We almost had no interruptions after the first hectic 2 weeks as everyone reorganized here but that’s not the case in America and this article goes into some of the current and future issues that may continue to plague (sorry) the food systems there.
That’s all for this month and hopefully I’ll see you back again next month with some more exciting and cool things!
